McClung Toabe Agar Base is recommended for detection and isolation of Clostridium perfringens from food samples on the basis of their lecithinase and lipase activity. Lecithinase enzyme lyses egg yolk lecithin, producing an opaque zone of precipitation surrounding the slightly raised colonies. Positive lipase activity is indicated as an irridescent sheen on the growth surface. Clostridium perfringens show positive lecithinase and lipase negative activity. Clostridium sporogenes show positive lipase and lecithinase negative activity. Staphylococcus aureus are lecithinase and lipase positive.
