Supplementation of the medium with serum, blood or ascitic fluid, it supports the growth of fastidious organisms such as, Neisseria meningitides , Haemophilus influenzae , Streptococcus pneumoniae etc. Shepard et al described its use for culturing Streptococcus pneumoniae and Actinomycetes .
