This medium is recommended for cultivation and differentiation of enteric bacteria, restricting swarmingof Proteus species from specimen samples, It does not contain crystal violet, Bile salts inhibit gram positive bacteria, Neutral red is the indicator dye, Escherichia coli and other lactose fermentors appear pink-red coloured and may be surrounded by a zone of acid precipitated bile, Non lactose fermentors Shigella and Salmonella are colourless ,Yersinia enterocolitica may appear as small, non-lactose fermenting colonies after incubation at room temperature
