Lowenstein Jensen Medium Base, Modified is used for the isolation of Mycobacterium species from mixed flora with added egg emulsion base, After an incubation at 35-37ºC for 2-4 weeks in presence of 5-10% carbon dioxide, M. tuberculosis grow as granular, rough, warty, dry friable colonies, Mycobacterium smegmatis as wrinkled, creamy white colonies, Mycobacterium kansasii as photochromogenic, smooth to rough colonies, Mycobacterium gordonae as smooth, yellow, orange colonies, while Mycobacterium avium forms smooth, nonpigmented colonies.
