Mannitol Selenite Broth (Selenite Mannitol Broth) is used for selective enrichment of Salmonellae from clinical materials. It can also be used for the selective enrichment of Salmonella from water and foodstuffs. Mannitol serves as fermentable carbohydrate. Selenite is inhibitory for coliforms and certain other microbial species, such as fecal streptococci, present in fecal specimens or others, thus is beneficial in the recovery of Salmonella species.
