Lactose is fermentable carbohydrate source and neutral red acts as a pH indicator. Enterobacteriaceae grows luxuriantlly on this media Lactose fermentors such as Escherichia coli changes the colour of medium to pink or pinkish red color. Lactose non fermentors such as Salmonella changes the colour of medium ss medium colourless to yellow.
